Week of June 25 – July 1 // Do Not Love The World // 1 John 2:15-17

What exactly about "the world" does God want us to avoid?

Box 7 Tip:

With the increasing time around buses and shows, what are the new opportunities you are seeing for ministry?

  • During show prep or “Eat, Pack, Load” time, if you are able to finish early, you might be able to gain quiet time in a shady spot near the bus or on an air-conditioned bus. You also could give your time to assist someone who is struggling with their loading or cleaning responsibilities
  • After shows, plan intentional conversations to build a new relationship or set up time with your Focus Group to read the Bible and pray

Plan: looking ahead a few days, how will I spend time with God?

Pray: where & when will I pray? what & who will I pray for?

Pursue: who is in my Focus Group, and how will we set aside time?

Week Overview

Scripture: 1 John 2:15-17

Breakaway Podcast: Do Not Love The World

Options for related reading or study:

Matthew 6:19-34

Psalm 73

We hope you will listen to this particular Breakaway podcast, as it explains a lifestyle of loving the world. Ben Stuart's summary statement is that loving the world is "a way of engaging and using the world for self-gratification and self-promotion" (around 9:00).

Key Verse

  • "And the world is passing away, along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever." 1 John 2:17

  • Suggested prayer: “Holy Father and Creator, help me to see where my desires stray to the world. Fill me with a pure love for you so that I can more humbly do your will, rather than my own. Help me to pattern my life after Jesus. Amen”

Read - 1 John 2:15-17

Writing out a short scripture is a great way to understand more of the meaning of the text (kind of like transcribing a piece of music). Try it!

Listen - “Do Not Love The World”

from Breakaway Ministries App or Stream Online

41 minutes, epilogue is optional

Respond - Personal Reflection & Obedience

The podcast adapted some questions from theologian Arthur Pink (around 23:10). Here they are for your consideration this week:

  • What do you seek with passion? What excites you? Being honored by the world or seeking to honor God?
  • What is more appealing to you: seeking physical pleasure, or seeking pleasure in God?
  • Where does your confidence lie: money, charisma, connections to people, or knowing God?
  • Where does your money go: is it all pouring into you, or some of it furthering the Gospel?
  • What most dominates your mind: positioning yourself to get what you need, or positioning yourself to enjoy the One who made you?

Share - Focus Group Times

As tour begins, you might need to adjust how your Focus Group works, or switch people in groups because of the new routines. Honestly ask your group if things are working for them. Face-to-face is better for this conversation than texting. Remember that that it only takes a few minutes to read the Bible, pray together, use the Discovery Bible Study format, or ask the discussion points below.

Discovery Bible Study suggestion for this week: 1 John 2:15-17

Discussion Points:

  • What are you thankful for this week?
  • How do you see God working in your corps?
  • Select some of the Personal Reflection points above for discussion.
  • Pray for Box 7 friends at your corps who may be struggling.
