Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.
Find a “spot” for time with God. Jesus was known for pulling away from the crowds, spending time by himself in nature to pray and recharge. Around your drum corps Move-Ins location, look for a location where you or a small group can routinely get away from the craziness of drum corps to reflect spend focused time with God. It might be in the bleachers, a balcony over a gym, a bench outside the school, a quiet lounge area inside the school. Where’s your “spot”?

John was one of the closest disciples of Jesus, and he wrote this Gospel account to help people believe in Jesus and have true life in him. John begins by setting the stage of how Jesus was more than a human (the “Word” of God, now dwelling among us). Jesus begins his ministry by inviting disciples to follow and learn from him. He performs one of the first miraculous signs of turning water into wine.
John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Psalm 27 (Click to redirect to Bible app)
Praying can be simple — just talking with God multiple times a day. He is delighted when speak to Him! You can ask Him to help you focus or share your struggles with Him. You can ask other Christians to help you pray.
Example prayer: “God, as I begin this summer, help me to seek your kingdom and live like Jesus. Help me today to know you, to have fellowship with Jesus, and to seek joy in you. Thank you for the grace you offer me through Jesus. Amen.”

Week 1 DBS Suggested Passages
Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is an interactive group method for engaging with God's Word. It takes minimal preparation, and works well for people from diverse backgrounds of faith. A DBS time with 3-5 people can span 15-20 minutes, or longer if you choose.
DBS emphasizes transformation through connection to God and real-life application. Please refrain from teaching about a passage or referring to other studies/sermons/stories that your group has not experienced.
As you read and discuss the Bible, try to process each of these questions. Some overlap as you discuss is fine!
For each week of the Reading Plan, here are suggested scripture passages for which you can host a Discovery Bible Study.
Anyone can participate in at DBS even if they are not reading the Gospel of John on their own.
If you have a longer gathering time (like extended snack during move-ins, staying overnight at a housing site, or a free day), you could select multiple passages for multiple sessions of Discovery Bible Study.

Before move-ins or anytime this summer, you can read Proverbs (near the middle of the Bible) as a way to understand how God has designed life in this world to work. There are 31 chapters, and it's easy to read 1 chapter a day.
The series of podcast teachings below are from Passion City Church in Washington, D.C. Ben Stuart is the pastor teaching through these topics from Proverbs.
"The minute you admit your need to God, you are barreling down the path of wisdom."
"The essence of foolishness is trying to divorce decisions from consequences." -Ben Stuart

Box 7 Tip: For this last week together, if you have final words for people in your corps, make a short list of the ones you would like to pursue a moment with. You can think through these kinds of conversations: who should I thank? who do I need to apologize to? who should I resolve conflict with? who in my section should I affirm publicly for their character? what staff member should I thank for what they taught me? who has been a faithful servant of Jesus? Spoken words can be some of the most powerful blessings we can give.
Box 7 Tip: What memories or performance moments do you want to remember from this season? Take some time away from social media or idle conversation to journal about these memories. You might be able to find a few more tweaks to your show-prep or EPL process to gain some time in these last couple weeks. Have you spent time lately with Scriptures or music that bring joy and hope in Jesus? If not, recall some of your favorites for your last few bus rides.
Box 7 Tip: Do you have some real life plans or school registrations that are not complete for the fall semester? Ask someone (maybe a corps staff member) to help you find time to get these done; it will be a great relief for your final weeks of rehearsal and performing. You might even ask a corps staff member to use a laptop and internet connection, which will help you focus and finish faster than working on your phone.
No specific podcast suggestion this week, but you can re-listen to any part of the two series, or catch one that you missed.
Week 10 will be "Millennials & the Church." Week 11 will be "Jesus + The Crucifiers."
Box 7 Tip: Is there someone in your corps (member or staff) who needs encouragement right now? Invite them to have a meal with you. Make the plan a block or day in advance, then meet before going through the food truck line to make it easier to connect and sit down together in your own space to talk. You can think ahead about caring questions to ask or genuine affirmation to give.
Box 7 Tip: It’s that time of the summer, when some dating relationships on tour begin to solidify. Are you or a friend beginning to date someone on tour because of the comfort that person brings? That relationship might not be honoring to God or emotionally healthy. A resource that Box 7 recommends on relationships in the Breakaway Ministries app. Check out the podcast folder entitled “Single / Dating / Engaged / Married.” Corps staff members may have wisdom on these relationships to pass on!
Box 7 Tip: How have your free-days or laundry blocks been so far? These can be excellent for recharging spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. The drum corps norm is to hang out with a group and spend money, but you might be more refreshed by spending time in healthy solitude and quiet. Give some thought to how you can strategically use your remaining free days or laundry times for your health and God’s glory.
Some of Jesus' teachings in Luke 13 and 14 are triggered by Israelite conflict with the Roman government, but how should these principles help us understand what God is doing in the world today?
