Week 9 // July 21 – 27

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

Do you have some real life plans or school registrations that are not complete for the fall semester? Ask someone (maybe a corps staff member) to help you find time to get these done; it will be a great relief for your final weeks of rehearsal and performing. You might even ask a staff member to use a laptop and internet connection, which will help you focus and finish faster than working on your phone.

Gospel Reading: John 16:16-18:40

Jesus promises them joy and that he has overcome the world. In chapter 17, his prays asking God’s plan to be glorified and for his followers to be unified, like God the Father is unified with the son. They all move outside to a garden where Judas betrays them by bringing the opposing religious leaders with soldiers to arrest Jesus. This begins Jesus laying down his life. He is demonstrating the reality of His Kingdom — a different way that seems upside-down from the world’s kingdom.

John 17:20-21 ""I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

Psalm Reading

Psalm 1 (Click to redirect to Bible app)

Prayer Prompt

God allows us to experience trials because his power can be displayed through us when we joyfully trust in Him through the challenges. This is a way that we get to imitate the life of Jesus — how he trusted in the Father’s plan through persecution and even laying down his life.

Suggested Prayer: “Father, I know that when challenges come you can be glorified. Help me see see my struggles and sin not as something to despair, but an opportunity for me to be joyful and obedient in all circumstances. Amen."

Week 8 // July 14 – 20

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

Is there someone in your corps (member or staff) who needs encouragement right now? Invite them to have a meal with you. Make the plan a day, or at least a block in advance, then meet before going through the food truck line to make it easier to connect and sit down together in your own space to talk. You can think ahead about caring questions to ask or genuine affirmation to give.

Gospel Reading: John 14:15-16:15

Jesus encourages his disciples with promises and an extended metaphor (John 15 - the vine and the branches). He teaches about the coming of the Holy Spirit, which will bring God’s presence to the hearts of every believer. He calls us to abide in Him like a branch is dependent on a vine, so that we can bear fruit and that whatever we ask of God he will give us. He wants the disciples to remember that the world will hate them, but they can depend on the Spirit to guide them.

Psalm Reading

Psalm 46 (Click to redirect to Bible app)

Prayer Prompt

While late-season drum corps can be an emotionally taxing environment, God can redeem our feelings and situations. Remember to practice gratitude - expressing what you are thankful for to God and to yourself. For any remaining anxieties, you can talk to God specifically about those feelings. You might be surprised how much better you feel after sharing your burdens with Him!

Suggested prayer: “God, you have given me so much to be grateful for. I ask for more of your joy and peace today. Amen."

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

It’s that time of the summer, when some dating relationships on tour begin to solidify. Are you or a friend beginning to date someone on tour because of the comfort that person brings? That relationship might not be honoring to God or emotionally healthy. A resource that Box 7 recommends on relationships in the Breakaway Ministries app. Check out the podcast folder entitled “Single / Dating / Engaged / Married.” Corps staff members may have wisdom on these relationships to pass on to you!

Gospel Reading: John 8:1-10:21

The second half of chapter 12 continues to draw the contrast that Jesus will save the world, but some hardened hearts will not believe in him. Jesus steps into extended private time with his disciples in Jerusalem to participate in a Jewish feast called the Passover. He demonstrates His love to them by washing their feet, acknowledges that one will betray him and one will deny him, yet he gives them hope by teaching “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

Prayer Prompt

This week, let’s express our gratitude to God for the opportunity in marching DCI this summer, and let’s pray for our staff and volunteers who are making the experience possible. You can write down specific points of gratitude and names of people to pray for on a napkin, dot-book page, or journal.

Suggested prayer: “Heavenly Father, you have blessed me with so much this summer - a creative community to live and perform with, staff and volunteers who are serving us, and the chance to travel and experience beauty in new places. Thank you for both the joy and the trials of today. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

Week 6 // June 30 – July 6

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

How have your free-days or laundry blocks been so far? These can be excellent for recharging spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. The drum corps norm is to hang out with a group and spend money, but you might be more refreshed by spending time in quiet reflection, walking in nature, talking with family or supporters back home, or praying for your corps. Give some thought to how you can strategically use your remaining free days or laundry times for your health and God’s glory.

Gospel Reading: John 8:1-10:21

Religious leaders (the Pharisees) are attempting to stone Jesus or arrest him because their hearts are hard to His teaching and authority. When Lazarus, the friend of Jesus, is sick and dies, Jesus uses this opportunity to show his power over death. He resurrects Lazarus, which causes many more Jews to believe in Jesus as the Son of God. This triggers the Pharisees to plan to kill him. Jesus knows this and begins to prepare his followers for the fulfillment of God’s plan.

Psalm Reading

Psalm 23 (Click to redirect to Bible app)

Prayer Prompt

Jesus said, "blessed are the peacemakers,” (not 'conflict avoiders'). Sometimes we need to be brave to enter conflict and bring peace in our corps. Pray this week to see if there may be some situation the Lord wants you to help resolve.

Suggested prayer: “God, help me to discern conflict when it arises and lead me to be a peacemaker. I trust in you and ask for you to wipe away my fear of people with bold love for people. Please guide me to create harmony at my drum corps. Amen.”

Week 5 // June 23 – 29

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

With the increasing time around buses and shows, what are the new opportunities you are seeing to bless people, share meals, or start meaningful conversations? During show prep or “Eat, Pack, Load” time, if you are able to finish early, you might be able to gain quiet time in a shady spot near the bus or getting on the bus early. You also could give your time to assist someone who is struggling with their loading or cleaning responsibilities. After shows, plan intentional conversations to build a new relationship or set up time with your Focus Group to read the Bible and pray.

Gospel Reading: John 8:1-10:21

This week’s readings begin with the grace & forgiveness Jesus extends to the woman caught in adultery. He teaches about himself with “I Am” statements. He teaches about freedom vs. slavery to sin. He teaches that God’s word is truth, while Satan is is the “father of lies.” He shows that blindness can be both a physical and spiritual condition. He is the Good Shepherd who chooses to lay down his life for his sheep.

Psalm Reading

Psalm 146 (Click to redirect to Bible app)

Prayer Prompt

Relationships of all kinds can be challenging. God’s perspective is that all people are made in his image. Praying for others can help you grow in respect, patience, and compassion for those around us in drum corps - even the annoying ones.

Suggested prayer: “Father, I pray that my relationships would be honoring to you. Help me to see everyone at my corps as having your image, for me to be patient, and gracious toward them just as you are with me, Amen”

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

If you are beginning tour this week, there will be change in your routines and the rhythms of how you interact with people. As the rhythms of a culture change, so does the rhythm of ministry. Take some extra minutes to plan ahead, pray, or seek advice at your corps about how to navigate this transition. For bus rides before/after shows, how can you build a habit to spend a few minutes being refreshed by Jesus? If you have a new tour job on the road, what people in that tour job routine can you pursue for a God-centered relationship?

Gospel Reading: John 6:22-7:53

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus teaches that He is the living bread from heaven, and the will of the Father is for everyone who looks on him will have eternal life. Jesus begins to teach that the world will hate those who follow him. Later in chapter 7, he teaches about the Holy Spirit. The community has conflicting ideas about who Jesus is and where his authority comes from.

Week 3 // June 9 – 15

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

Are you building some close friendships where you are vulnerable about how you’re actually feeling? If not, try being more interested in other people, asking questions to get to know them, rather than thinking about yourself and expecting people to pursue you. Pray to God for his grace to give you more humility (thinking less of yourself). Practicing healthy self-control on social media/texting habits will help you be more more “present” and aware of the potential friendships right around you.

Gospel Reading: John 4:39-6:21

Many people start to believe in Jesus as he reveals himself as the Messiah (the promised Savior) and Son of God. He heals the sick, feeds the five thousand, and walks on water. Some Jewish leaders are already angry and seeking to kill him. Jesus speaks all the more to them that he is doing God’s will, which is to lead people to true life.

Prayer Prompt

God does not want us to journey in faith alone. He wants us to have friendships with people who are seeking His Kingdom, and He wants us to share his Good News through friendships. Ask God to provide these relationships and show you how He is working through them!

Suggested prayer: “God, I confess that I may want to hide, but help me to invest in others around me and point them toward Jesus, just as others point me back to him.”

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

If you did not try last week’s tip of finding your “spot” for quiet time, check back on the week 1 post... As you get settled into Move-Ins, you can ask a more experienced member or staff about how to save time in your daily routine. If you have not already established a Box 7 small group or “Focus Group,” start paying attention to who is connected to Box 7 that you see often during the day. Invite them to join you for a Focus Group time this week, then commit to meet a few more times. Don't feel like you have to commit to a group for the whole summer.

Gospel Reading: John 2:13 - 4:38

Jesus reveals who He is and teaches about God through several encounters — cleansing the temple from corrupt businessmen, prophesying his death & resurrection, talking with Nicodemus about the mystery of being “born again” (which includes the famous John 3:16 passage), and his grace-filled interaction with the Samaritan woman at the well.

Psalm Reading

Psalm 24 (Click to redirect to Bible app)

Prayer Prompt

"Spending a minute in prayer or journaling strays thoughts before reading the Bible can help calm your soul. A conversation with God can be simple, asking Him to understand who he is and how his reality can set you free. You can also ask Him to be working at your corps.

Example prayer: “God, I want to let your light into the areas of my life so that I may experience freedom. In your son Jesus I am free to be myself, confess my sin, and come back into relationship with you. Thank you for your love and cleansing through Jesus. Amen.”

Week 1 // May 26 – June 1

Welcome to the Box 7 WORD 2019 Weekly Posts! Below you'll find suggested ways to grow spiritually for this week - both individually and with others at your corps.

Tip of the Week

Find a “spot” for time with God. Jesus was known for pulling away from the crowds, spending time by himself in nature to pray and recharge. Around your drum corps Move-Ins location, look for a location where you or a small group can routinely get away from the craziness of drum corps to reflect spend focused time with God. It might be in the bleachers, a balcony over a gym, a bench outside the school, a quiet lounge area inside the school. Where’s your “spot”?

Gospel Reading: John 1:1 - 2:12

John was one of the closest disciples of Jesus, and he wrote this Gospel account to help people believe in Jesus and have true life in him. John begins by setting the stage of how Jesus was more than a human (the “Word” of God, now dwelling among us). Jesus begins his ministry by inviting disciples to follow and learn from him. He performs one of the first miraculous signs of turning water into wine.

Discovery Bible Study Guide 2019

Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is an interactive group method for engaging with God's Word. It takes minimal preparation, and works well for people from diverse backgrounds of faith. A DBS time with 3-5 people can span 15-20 minutes, or longer if you choose.

DBS emphasizes transformation through connection to God and real-life application. Please refrain from teaching about a passage or referring to other studies/sermons/stories that your group has not experienced.

The Method:

  1. Optional: watch a 3-minute video on YouTube
  2. Select a group facilitator who will pray and guide the conversation
  3. Ask everyone to share, "What are you grateful for today?"
  4. Quiet your hearts and let the facilitator pray a simple prayer. Ask God to help us focus and hear what He has for us.
  5. Facilitator selects two people to read the scripture passage, in two different translations.  Facilitator reminds people of the DBS questions (below).
  6. Read the passage in the first translation. Pause for a moment to reflect.
  7. Re-read the passage in the second translation. Optional: you can have a third translation or someone paraphrase the passage in their own words.
  8. Facilitator guides through the questions, keeping the group focused on the questions (sometimes there will be overlap).  Allow people to take time to absorb, process, and verbalize what God is teaching them.
  9. The main rule of DBS conversations is to avoid teaching about the text or bringing in outside resources/sermons. Choose to focus on the scripture and hearing from God, then how you can apply what you're learning.
  10. Facilitator guides participants to choose a simple step of accountability for what they have learned.

The DBS Questions:

As you read and discuss the Bible, try to process each of these questions. Some overlap as you discuss is fine!

  1. What does this passage tell us about God?
  2. What does this passage say about us?
  3. How can I apply it? (Make it a personal, specific application)
  4. Who can I share it with?

Tips for DBS in Drum Corps

  • A small group of 3-6 people is best. This might be a "Focus Group" of people from your section, tour job, housing/bus assignment. Feel free to invite someone who is exploring faith to join in!
  • Communicate a clear beginning and ending time. We recommend using a wristwatch to keep track of time or having the group facilitator set an alarm. That helps everyone else feel more free to focus and put their phones on Do Not Disturb mode.
  • If you have extra time, starting with a conversation of gratitude can "shift the room" and lift your spirits before studying the Bible. See more in the Focus Group Guide.
  • If people come late or leave early, it's ok! Try to welcome, acknowledge, or appreciate them at least non-verbally with a smile or wave.
  • Followup conversations for accountability and growth are easy to set in drum corps because we see each other frequently for meals and other moments of free time. Be creative and flexible about how you can encourage each other every few days. It's easy to ask someone, "Can we meet before the lunch line tomorrow to eat together and pray?"

Gospel of John: Scripture Suggestions for DBS

For each week of the Reading Plan, here are suggested scripture passages for which you can host a Discovery Bible Study.
Anyone can participate in at DBS even if they are not reading the Gospel of John on their own.

If you have a longer gathering time (like extended snack during move-ins, staying overnight at a housing site, or a free day), you could select multiple passages for multiple sessions of Discovery Bible Study.
